RADIATION MODELLING
At CFS, our team of engineers is proficient in using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational fluid dynamics software. We have completed numerous projects employing FDS, with one area of expertise being thermal radiation to assist in exposure protection design. Our adeptness with FDS enables us to tackle a diverse range of projects and applications, tailoring our approach to meet each client’s unique requirements.
STAIRCASE PRESSURIZATION
At CFS, our team of engineers is well-versed in using simulation software, such as CONTAM, for designing staircase pressurization systems in multistory buildings. We have successfully executed projects where we determined the appropriate fan sizes needed to pressurize staircases and elevators during fire evacuations. Our simulations consider both winter and summer conditions, ensuring fan sizes are suitable for all seasons. Leveraging our expertise in advanced technology, we confidently provide reliable and accurate recommendations tailored to each project’s requirements.
MODERN Warehouse Design
Our team of engineers is skilled in various aspects of engineering, including wet services, fire, and structural design. In a recent project involving a modern warehouse in South Africa, we were responsible for overseeing these three key areas. Our team’s knowledge and experience enabled us to efficiently produce a tailored, high-quality design that aligned with the project’s unique needs and requirements.
Bulk LPG deluge system design
Our team of engineers has experience in designing and managing special hazard suppression systems. In one such project, CFS designed the deluge system for an expansion of an above-ground bulk LPG storage facility. Drawing on our expertise and successful track record, we developed a customized, high-quality design that effectively addressed the project’s specific requirements. Additionally, our experience spans across diverse applications, including mines, compressor sites, and other industrial settings, demonstrating our versatility and adaptability in the field.
MINING FIRE SAFETY
In a recent mining fire safety project, CFS conducted FDS simulations on polyurethane-coated gravitational separation spirals to identify the optimal sprinkler head or deluge nozzle locations for suppression systems across multiple mines in South Africa. The suppression design was carried out in accordance with FM Global requirements, and alternative approaches were explored using FDS modelling and full-scale experiments. This project showcases our ability to address the unique fire safety challenges that arise in mining environments while adhering to industry standards.
STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
CFS has successfully worked on multiple student accommodation projects across South Africa. In one such 1000-bed project, our team was responsible for designing water reticulation, wastewater reticulation, and fire engineering systems. We created four hot water plant rooms to serve all 21 student blocks, a large domestic and fire water tank and pump room with a central ring main, as well as an evacuation plan and detection system. Our expertise in these areas allowed us to develop an integrated and efficient solution tailored to the specific needs of the project.
Evacuation modelling
At CFS, our team of engineers has extensive experience in conducting evacuation modelling using Pathfinder for various types of projects. We have successfully completed multiple evacuation simulations for diverse settings, including multistorey buildings, large arenas, churches, and more. Our proficiency in using evacuation and fire modelling tools allows us to deliver analyses that cater to each project’s unique requirements, ensuring optimal safety and efficiency in emergency situations.
Fire safety for unique storage requirements
At CFS, our team of engineers specializes in addressing fire safety challenges for unique storage requirements. We have experience working with various projects, such as a five-story racking storage system with a 90m x 40m floor area, where we utilized FDS and evacuation modelling to explore questions beyond the scope of SANS10400-T. Our expertise in advanced simulation tools allows us to provide thorough analyses tailored to the specific needs of each project, ensuring optimal safety solutions for diverse storage configurations.
Explosion studies
At CFS, we recognize the importance of conducting comprehensive blast studies to ensure the safety and resilience of structures, equipment and personnel. Our team of engineers utilizes tools such as ALOHA and PHAST for detailed analysis, enabling us to assess overpressure, blast impacts on structures and equipment, radiation, and other factors that could affect a facility’s integrity. By integrating our findings with MARPLOT, we can effectively plot results on aerial maps to provide a clear visual representation of potential hazards. Our proficiency in these cutting-edge tools allows us to deliver accurate and actionable insights, helping clients make informed decisions for optimal safety and risk mitigation.
